Collision Reporting

Two vehicle rear end collision

View our collision pamphlet and keep a few copies in every vehicle you own. It will help you if you are involved in a collision.

I've been involved in a collision. I want to know about...

Call 9-1-1.

Requires that every person directly or indirectly involved in a collision shall report forthwith to the police if it resulted in:

  • Injuries, or
  • Property damage apparently exceeding $5000 (Effective January 1, 2025), or
  • Damage to highway property.

By law, when you are involved in a collision on a public street, you must give the following information to any witness or person sustaining loss or injury:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Your driver's licence number and what province it was issued from
  • Car insurance company and policy number
  • Your licence plate number
  • Name and address of registered owner of the vehicle if it is not you

We recommend you provide this information in collisions that occur off the public streets as well.

Write down the licence plate number of the other car and a description of the driver and their vehicle and call 519-661-5670. If you feel you are in danger, call 9-1-1.

Call 519-661-5670 to report the collision. We will send a police officer to the scene.

You are not required to report this collision to the police. You are required to exchange your driver's licence information, vehicle ownership information and insurance information with the other involved driver.

Remove your vehicles from the road if it can be done safely. Exchange all required information with the other involved driver (see question above). Attend the Police Reporting Centre with your vehicle forthwith.

Arrange for a tow truck or call 519-661-5670, during Police Reporting Centre business hours and we will assist you with getting a tow truck. The tow truck will take your vehicle to the Police Reporting Centre.  If after hours a police officer will attend to investigate.

Attend the Police Reporting Centre to report the hit and run.

This is a hit and run. Obtain as much information about the vehicle as possible, most importantly the licence plate number. Call 9-1-1 if you are injured or if there is a traffic hazard. Call 519-661-5670 if you can move your vehicle somewhere safe and wait for an officer.

Motor Vehicle Collision Report (MVCR)

In an effort to protect personal privacy, the London Police Service (LPS) is no longer providing copies of the MVCR to involved parties.

You can request a copy of this report through the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO)  website. It is important to note that MVCR’s may be amended after the fact if the investigation is still ongoing.

You will require the collision date, as well as either a Driver Licence Number (DL) if it was reported, or a collision report number (our LPS report number). If you are using a DL, do not include the dashes.

LPS Electronic Collision Reports are entered on the system as 2024-123456.

The full year is entered, then a hyphen, followed by the LPS report number.  ie. 2024-123456.

Please note that there may be a delay between the accident date and when the collision report is available on the MTO site, but you will not be charged if the report is not yet available for purchase. The MTO site suggests that you wait 4 to 6 weeks before you order online. You are welcome to try and order the report sooner, however please allow a minimum of 2 full weeks, and please ensure you’ve tried all 3 formats listed above before you contact the officer regarding the report that is unavailable.
