LPS In Focus: Canine Unit

Have you met Max and Cooper yet? These two police service dogs and their human handlers are featured in this ‘In Focus’ video about the work of the London Police Service’s Canine Unit.
About the LPS dogs
- Acquired mainly from Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic
- Start training between 15- and 18-months old; LPS has German Shepherds, a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix and a Labrador.
- Training for a general purpose dog is 16 weeks and includes tracking, open search, building search, evidence search, handler protection, apprehension, obedience and agility
- To be certified the dog must follow a 1.5 kilometre track that is at least 45 minutes old across various types of surfaces including pavement, and locate five articles
- Some LPS dogs are specially trained for detecting firearms, drugs and/or explosives
