Special Investigations Unit Investigating

UPDATE – LONDON, ON (July 21, 2023) – Two people have been transported to hospital in relation to an early morning weapons investigation in southeast London. Police do not believe the two individuals are known to each other.

Shortly before 8:40 a.m., police were originally called to Edmunds Crescent after a man attempted to steal a vehicle from a citizen. The suspect male was reported to be in possession of a firearm at the time of the incident. Shortly after the original 9-1-1 call, subsequent 9-1-1 calls were received in relation to the same suspect male in possession of a firearm in backyards of residences on Glenroy Road.

A number of officers attended the area and were notified of a potential location of the suspect.

Neighbouring residences were evacuated, and Glenroy Road was closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

While police were on scene, officers were notified that a citizen had been transported to hospital by paramedic services in relation to a separate 9-1-1 call. The citizen had sustained a gunshot wound believed to have been caused by the suspect male.

The police located the suspect male who remained in possession of a firearm.

A firearm was discharged.

The suspect was transported to hospital by paramedic services.

There is no additional risk to public safety. The investigation remains active and ongoing and there will be an increased police presence in the area.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked their mandate. As such, all inquiries regarding the investigation are to be directed to the Special Investigations Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

Quote from Chief Truong:

This morning’s events are another reminder of the work that members of the London Police Service (LPS) do each and every day to protect our citizens and our city.  Our officers responded to multiple emergency calls for assistance following an attempted carjacking by a suspect. We now believe the same individual is also responsible for discharging a firearm at a member of the public. Our officers, with support from our skilled Communications Operators, worked together to protect our community against a violent and armed individual.  Every day, LPS members come to work to serve and protect.  I am proud of our front-line police officers, Canine Unit, and Emergency Response Unit who put their own lives on the line for others today.”
