STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE
Ongoing SIU investigation
LONDON, ON (October 28, 2021) – At approximately 3:45 a.m., officers from the London Police Service responded to a call for service in the area of Mill and St. George streets. Upon arrival, there was an interaction between a citizen and two of our officers.
During the interaction, a police firearm was discharged and a citizen was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The citizen has since succumbed to those injuries. One of the officers was injured as a result of the interaction, and was also transported to hospital. The injured officer has since been discharged from hospital.
As a result of what occurred, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) was notified and will lead the investigation in accordance with their mandate.
It remains our practice to be as transparent as possible with the public, having regard to the sensitivity of investigations and the limits placed upon us in releasing information in certain circumstances. When the SIU is engaged in an investigation such as this, we are prevented, by legislation, from discussing details of the matter.
Critical incidents such as this impact individuals, and the community, in a multitude of ways. We are actively supporting our members with a variety of resources.
