PROJECT SAFE AUTO 2024
PROJECT SAFE AUTO
LONDON, ON (March 11, 2024) – With funding from the Ministry of the Solicitor General Preventing Auto Thefts Grant program, the London Police Service is launching “Project Safe Auto”.
The project will involve public awareness and education campaigns, as well as additional enforcement throughout the city. Starting this month, you will see members of our LPS Auxiliary out in the community providing information to the public.
In addition to Auxiliary community engagement, the project will have a four-pillar approach to address auto theft, involving awareness, analysis, enforcement, and technology. The LPS will use enhanced technology to help detect, combat and address auto theft. This technology assists officers to detect stolen vehicles, identifies vehicles of choice, high-risk areas of thefts, as well as offenders.
Members of the Uniformed Division have projects underway including bail monitoring of high-risk offenders being released.
“We are grateful for the support of the Ministry of the Solicitor General in the form of funding from the Preventing Auto Thefts Grant program in the amount of $900,000 over three years,” said Detective Inspector Alex Krygsman, head of the Investigative Services Branch. “With this support, “Project Safe Auto” has been established to enhance our efforts to prevent, detect, and combat auto thefts in our community. Some of these initiatives are already underway, and others will be undertaken throughout the duration of “Project Safe Auto”. Our goals are to prevent members of our community from becoming victims of auto theft, and to eliminate auto theft in our community through detection and enforcement, and by holding offenders accountable.”
Motor vehicles play a significant role in day-to-day lives and are a high-value item that thieves want. As a result, they are often targeted by criminals for theft. We all have a role in crime prevention; please show your support by doing your part to help protect your vehicle from theft. Lock your vehicle’s doors, do not leave a running vehicle unattended, if possible, park in a secure garage or in well lit areas, and secure your key fobs to prevent them from being hacked.
Call 9-1-1 if you witness a crime in progress and if you have information that can assist us in locating a reported stolen vehicle, or catching individuals responsible for a theft, call our non-emergency line at 519-661-5670 or make an online report.
