London Police Service modernizes emergency communications
Next Generation 9-1-1 launching June 18
LONDON, ON (June 17, 2024) – On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the London Police Service will become the first Single-tier Municipality Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in Ontario to launch Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1), an innovative and transformational technology solution which will improve the public’s access to 9-1-1 emergency services.
Following a mandatory decision from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in June of 2017 requiring all PSAPs to upgrade their networks and technology to provide NG9-1-1 services to the public by March 2025, LPS began the process of sourcing this technology and beginning the lengthy transformation of the LPS Communication Centre for this purpose.
In September 2022, Comtech Solacom was awarded the contract for the NG9-1-1 Guardian Call Management solution, which will provide a geo-diverse, redundant system which allows call takers to quickly assess, prioritize and handle landline, wireless and VoIP calls. Call takers can quickly create multi-party conferences, transfer calls, determine the location of callers and play back recently recorded conversations.
“The launch of NG9-1-1 marks a significant step forward in modernizing our emergency response and ensuring we are providing our community with the highest level of service possible,” said Deputy Chief Treena MacSween who oversees PSAP operations for LPS. “This technology will help us now and into the future, as we continue to advance our operations and expand how we connect with our community.”
Members of the public do not have to do anything differently when calling 9-1-1 for help. The LPS asks the community not to ‘test’ the system by calling 9-1-1 as it will cause delays in response times and could compromise public safety.
