LPS LEWIS CORAY TRAILBLAZER AWARDS CELEBRATE YOUTH VIRTUALLY

LPS Lewis Coray Trailblazer Awards Celebrate Youth Virtually
An evening of inspiration to honour Black History Month

LONDON, ON (February 26, 2020) – This evening, the London Police Service (LPS), its members and the community gathered virtually to celebrate an evening of inspiration for the 10th Annual Lewis Coray “Trailblazer Awards” to mark the closing of Black History Month.

This year’s keynote speaker was Barbara Nathoo, Principal of St. Jude’s Catholic School. In addressing the award nominees, she emphasized the importance of celebrating differences, seeking opportunities, and finding one’s voice to advocate for justice and equity.

Each year the ‘Trailblazer Awards’ are presented to youth in London’s Black community who submit a winning essay or video outlining the importance of Black History Month and what it means to them.

“Tonight, we honour Lewis ‘Bud’ Coray’s legacy and recognize him for the trailblazer he is. We also look to the young people we are honouring this evening – the trailblazers of their generation – and congratulate them on their nominations,” said Chief Steve Williams during his opening remarks. “This is a time for us to celebrate and recognize diversity and achievements, while acknowledging the sacrifices endured as we move toward the shared goal of racial equality.”

The LPS congratulates all 2021 Trailblazer award recipients and nominees of the evening, including Danielle Njoh, Destin Gardiner and Esther Clarke.

The winning submissions included the importance of Black History Month, recognized Black historical figures, and honoured Lewis Coray’s contributions as the first Black police officer in London.

The LPS is proud to offer opportunities for growth and success among youth from the African, Caribbean and Black Canadian communities in London.
