LONDON POLICE DETECTIVE RECEIVES 2019 ‘BRIAN YOUNG AWARD’
LONDON, ON (June 14, 2019) – London police Det. Amanda Pfeffer was awarded the 2019 Brian Young Award today for her work to end abuse and neglect of older adults.
Established in honour of retired London Police Service Inspector Brian Young, the award was bestowed during a special ceremony by the Elder Abuse London Middlesex Committee. Det. Pfeffer, a member of the London Police Service (LPS) since 2002, is assigned to the Financial Crimes Unit.
“Amanda demonstrates a quiet concern about elders and services that community well in her role within the Police service,” said Patrick Fleming, chair of the Elder Abuse London Middlesex Network.
The Brian Young award is given annually to an individual or group who:
1. Supports a collaborative community based approach
2. Engages in proactive strategies
3. Works toward creating an atmosphere which removes barriers faced by older adults
4. Increases awareness regarding abuse
“Elder abuse continues to be a wide-spread issue across our city,” said Det. Supt. Chris Newton, head of the Criminal Investigation Division. “We’re proud to continue to honour Inspector Young’s professional legacy with this award program by recognizing those who dedicate themselves to protecting the vulnerable in our community.
“Amanda is one of those people, and well-deserving of this award,” he said.
Det. Pfeffer is a member of the Elder Abuse London Middlesex Network and the Law Enforcement Agencies Protecting Seniors Network. She actively assists network members and works in the community to assist many elders with obtaining the assistance they require. She is also often called upon to investigate and review cases of potential elder abuse.
Insp. (Ret.) Young founded a community-based and senior-driven inter-linking community response network to assist abused and neglected older adults in London and Middlesex County. He led the establishment of the Seniors Helpline at the London Distress Centre and set the foundation for the coordinated response to abuse of older adults, which has now become the Elder Abuse London Middlesex Committee.
