Life in the Forest City

London is situated along the Montreal-Windsor corridor and is the seat of Middlesex County, at the forks of the Thames River, about halfway between Toronto, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan.

Music & Culture
The city hosts a number of musical and artistic exhibits throughout the year. London’s festivals contribute to its tourism industry, including Museum London, The Grand Theatre and more. The arts thrive in nearly every corner of the city. London put down its creative roots early, over the years nurturing a heart and soul that has produced some great Canadian talent in both the visual and performing arts. Whether you are visiting Old East Village, Wortley Village or the Downtown core, there are tons of shops and local treasures to explore.

Sports & Concerts
London boasts a 10,000-seat facility called Budweiser Gardens. The multi-purpose venue hosts major touring performers and acts. In 2019, the Juno Awards were presented and Bud Gardens has hosted many world renowned musical talents. It is also home to the London Knights, Ontario Hockey League and Memorial Cup champions.

Thriving Communities
London has experienced significant economic growth in recent years—it boasts an increasingly diverse economy—and is positioned to provide many benefits to businesses.
London’s population of 400,000 will increase substantially over the next 20 years. It is forecasted that the city’s population will grow by over 77,000 people and employment will grow by 43,000 net new jobs by 2035. In addition, commercial uses, offices, institutions, and industries will all grow over the next 20 years. London’s economy will expand and the number of people employed in the city will increase significantly.

Education
In addition to Western University, Ivey Business School and its three affiliated university colleges, London is the home to Fanshawe College and several medical institutions, each contributing to London’s reputation as an international centre of higher education, scientific research and cultural activities. There are an array of international language schools, elementary and secondary schools for growing families.

Parks & Recreation
London has over 200 parks to explore with the winding Thames River to behold throughout the city. Our parks vary in size from large urban city-wide parks such as the 140-hectare Springbank Park to more intimate neighbourhood green spaces that may be just a small oasis of native species plantings. London also has a variety of parks for skateboarding and off leash dog parks. The city is known as the forest city as you will find to be true as you explore the park lands.
The London Police Service
The London Police Service’s more than 1000 members are committed to making London safer.
The strategic priorities within the 2019-2021 Business Plan are the foundation for our organization’s efforts.

Community Safety
Public safety continues to be a primary priority for the London Police Service and the community. Public survey and community consultations, undertaken as part of the strategic planning process, revealed that drug abuse and drug-related crimes, violent crimes, property-crimes, road safety and police visibility are priorities for the public. Therefore, strategic priorities have been developed to reflect actions to be taken to address these priorities, in addition to the core responsibilities of police as mandated under the current Police Services Act.
Desired outcomes: reduced crime and victimization/re-victimization; increased involvement of communities collaboration in problem solving and safety initiatives; improved information sharing with criminal justice partners; reduced collision-related injuries and fatalities; reduced crimes against public order.

Community Well-being
Community well-being and the quality of life and experiences for those who reside in, work in, or visit the City of London is also a priority of the London Police Service. Well-being includes the social, environmental and cultural conditions that are essential for individuals and their communities (broadly defined) to flourish, and comprises issues related to mental health, addictions, and social disorder, which were frequently cited as concerns during the public consultations and the survey process. Community well-being also encompasses people’s sense of belonging and our own members’ job satisfaction and opportunities. The London Police Service recognizes the importance of public trust and cultural humility, and will continue to work with the community to achieve a shared sense of well-being.
Desired outcomes: increased sense of belonging; reduced social disorder; reduced rates of re-victimization; appropriate response to victims, the vulnerable, members of the BIPOC and other ethno-cultural persons and groups; enhanced public trust and confidence in police; increased satisfaction with police services.

Organizational Capacity
The London Police Service proactively seeks opportunities to maximize operational efficiencies, enhance employee wellness and optimize organizational capacity. Police services are faced with increasing financial pressures and service demands due to economic constraints, legislative changes, community expectations and the increasing complexity of crime.
Investments in appropriate technology, infrastructure, and human resources are critical enablers of cost-effective service delivery. A key success factor is having members who are engaged, developed and supported throughout their careers. Our members are the face of our Organization and the London Police Service is continuing to work towards being more understanding and reflective of London’s diverse communities.
Desired outcomes: increased transparency, fairness and accountability; increased diversity and inclusiveness of membership; increased member satisfaction; increased morale; improved employee performance; optimal resource allocation; enhanced service delivery; improved decision-making and problem solving.
