Summons Server (Temporary, Full Time)

Salary: $52,777 (Starting) to $77,036 (at 30 Months)

Position Summary:  
Summons Servers are Special Constables employed by the London Police Service (LPS) to serve summons and subpoenas to individuals involved with court cases. Summons Servers wear uniforms, carry use of force equipment, and represent the London Police Service and London Court Services in the community.

Responsibilities:
•    Receive legal documents to be served to individuals involved with court cases.
•    Utilize various databases to attempt to locate individuals including the London Police Service (LPS)’s Records Management System (RMS), Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) database, the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC), and eJust Case Management System.
•    Independently locate and serve individuals various legal documents while maintaining vigilance and awareness of surroundings and responsibility for their own safety.
•    Answer questions from served individuals or the public while in the community. 
•    Return documents to external police services upon completion and when unable to serve. 
•    Maintain duty book notes and a log of documents received from numerous agencies. 
•    Collaborate with community agencies including Probation and Parole, Salvation Army, Men’s Mission, Unity Project, and other police services.
•    Assist uniformed officers in locating missing people. 
•    Advise the Communications Section of any accidents or suspicious activity. 
•    Attend court when required.
•    Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.

Requirements:
•    Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. 
•    Successful completion of LPS Special Constable Training (provided on-the-job).
•    Successful completion of the OPC issued Special Constable exam (provided on-the-job).
•    Annual Use of Force re-certification (provided on-the-job).
•    Valid First-Aid/CPR training (provided on-the-job).
•    6-12 months’ relevant experience working with the public. 
•    Good problem-solving and judgement skills required for decisions that usually involve selecting from one of several optimal or existing set of solutions or protocols
•    Effective communication skills required for regular in-person contact with members of the public to deliver summons, often requiring an explanation of the process to uncooperative/distressed parties.

Benefits/Pension:
Temporary members receive ten percent (10%) of their hourly rate in lieu of benefits (after 120 calendar days) and are also eligible to join the OMERS Pension Plan upon their first day of hire. 

Hours of Duty:
Monday-Friday; 0600-1400hrs and 0730-1530hrs
