Halloween Safety & Advice
Your haunted house
When setting the scene for a perfect Halloween night, we know decorations are everything! However, keep safety in mind for the little trick-or-treaters who will pay you a visit into the evening. Ensure there are no obstacles on pathways leading up to your door step and ensure your lights are on for safety.
Avoid using any open flames in your displays. Consider using LED candles this year to light up your jack-o’-lanterns instead. They are a safe alternative.
Costume safety
When choosing the perfect costume for Halloween, make safety your priority. Here are some tips to consider:
- When choosing a costume, ensure it fits properly to reduce the chance of tripping.
- Ensure vision is not restricted by a mask. Consider opting for face paint instead.
- Wear a light-coloured costume, or use reflective tape to be seen.
- Wear comfortable shoes that fit properly to put your best foot forward.
- Increase visibility with the use of glow sticks and bracelets.
- Costume props are fun, but they shouldn’t be a hazard to others. Ensure there are no sharp edges.
- Add a flashlight to complete the costume!
First safety, then treats:
Plan ahead for a safe Halloween night. Children should be accompanied by an adult. If you are unable to take them, consider asking an older sibling, parent or grandparent instead. Parents, set out a route for your children to follow and a set time for them to return home.
Consider sending a cellphone along with them so they can call for help if needed.
Advise your little witches and vampires to always bring their candy home to be inspected before eating it. Parents should always go through treats to ensure there are no hazards. Throw away any open packages or homemade treats.
“Boo-yah,” it’s time to trick-or-treat
Before heading out, remember:
- Walk, don’t run;
- Stay on the sidewalks (If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic);
- Cross at marked cross walks;
- Do not cut across lawns or take short-cuts to avoid obstacles and hazards;
- Take masks off when walking from one house to the next;
- Do not talk to strangers or go into houses or unknown vehicles;
- Only visit houses that are lit; and,
- Avoid animals you don’t know.
Drive cautiously on Halloween
On Halloween night, we ask all motorists to slow down, be observant and always be prepared to stop for trick-or-treaters. Halloween is an exciting time for the little ones so keep safety top of mind. Always enter and exit driveways slowly and take extra care at intersections.
We wish all a safe and happy Halloween!
