Bicycle Safety

No matter how old you are, there are laws you must obey when riding your bike. For the most part, you have to follow the same rules that cars follow, such as red lights and stop signs. You are also required to have the following safety equipment:

Equipment for your bike

Bicycles must have

  • A horn or bell
  • A working white light on the front of your bicycle that must be turned on from dusk to dawn
  • A red reflector attached to the rear of your bicycle from dusk to dawn
  • White reflectors on the front forks of your bicycle that are 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide
  • One set of working brakes

We recommend

A Red flashing or glowing lights on the rear of your bicycle if you are riding at night

Equipment for you

Helmets

Anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. If your child is caught not wearing a helmet the adult caring for that child can be given a ticket for letting him or her ride without one.

We recommend

Everyone wear a helmet. If you fall off and hit your head, your life could be changed forever. It simply isn't worth the risk.

A Unicycle is a one-wheeled bicycle. Unicycles do not need headlights!
