Winter Safety
Stay safe and prepared during the colder months. As the temperature drops and winter weather conditions set in, it is important to equip yourself with the knowledge and tools to navigate the season safely. Our goal is to ensure that you and your loved ones can enjoy a safe and secure winter.
Road Safety
At this time of year, road conditions can be unpredictable. Keep an eye on the forecast and be cautious in slippery conditions.
- Keep an emergency winter kit in your vehicle: Include items such as blankets, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, non-perishable food, and water. Keep this kit in your home and car
- Always wear a seatbelt and ensure car seats for your children are properly installed
- Use your vehicle’s full lighting system in poor visibility and whiteout conditions
- Slow down and increase your following distance to allow for longer stopping times on icy or snowy roads. Remember, speed limits are set for ideal conditions, not winter weather
- Bring your cell phone and car charger for emergencies
- Ensure your car is in good mechanical condition and have winter tires installed
- Drive distraction free and leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you
In-Store Holiday Shopping
- Do not leave your belongings or purse unattended, even for a moment
- If you must leave your purchases in the car, keep them out of sight and stored away in the trunk
- Always lock your vehicle
Online Holiday Shopping
When shopping online, be sure to stick to credible online stores and do your research.
- If you receive promotional emails, go directly to the company website. Don’t click the link.
- Ensure the sites you are shopping on are secure prior to giving your credit card information
- If you are shopping on Kijiji or online market places, never send money without having the item in hand first
Decking the Halls
- If your Christmas tree is visible from the outside, hold off on placing gifts under the tree
- Keep an eye on your pets. Tinsel, ribbons and parcels could pose a choking hazard for them.
- Once the presents have been unwrapped, consider taking boxes for things such as computers, electronics and televisions straight to a recycling depot yourself - no need to alert a thief to what new toys Santa brought you by leaving the boxes outside your home
- Lock it or lose it – always lock your doors and your garage to secure your belongings
Celebrating
- Never drive impaired alcohol or drugs. The only safe impairment level is zero.
- Plan ahead. Appoint a designated driver in your group or take a taxi or public transit.
- If you see a suspected impaired driver, call 9-1-1
We are wishing all a safe and happy holiday season.
