Court Prisoner Security Officer (Temporary, Part-Time)
Position Summary:
Court Prisoner Security Officers (CPSOs) work at the London Courthouse (80 Dundas Street) within the London Police Service (LPS). CPSOs work within a team to ensure the safety and security of the courthouse and maintain care and control of persons in custody.
Responsibilities:
· Conduct security screening at the entrance of the Courthouse and operate an x-ray machine and magnetometer.
· Search courtrooms and other areas of the premises to ensure security and seize articles which may pose a threat to the safety of persons on the premises.
· Search prisoners upon entry into the cellblock and when sentenced or arrested on a warrant throughout the day.
· Record the intake and transfer of all prisoner property and prescription medication.
· Administer prescription medication when required and document administration.
· Assess all prisoners’ health and safety upon arrival and throughout the day.
· Maintain constant vigilance of surroundings and actions of persons in custody.
· Transport prisoners from EMDC to the Courthouse, secure all necessary paperwork and maintain detailed documentation of prisoner movement.
· Escort prisoners throughout the day to the appropriate courtrooms for their appearance and maintain observation and security of prisoner while attending court.
· Monitor video equipment in holding cells and transportation vehicles.
· Maintain a clear, chronological list of daily activities in duty book.
· Submit witness statements when necessary.
· Respond to panic alarms and emergencies within the courthouse.
· Utilize de-escalation strategies when attempting to diffuse a problematic situation.
· Employ use-of-force when circumstances warrant and according to applicable legislation and LPS Procedure.
· Execute warrants, summons, and DNA orders and complete all pertinent paperwork.
· Liaise with correctional institutions and relay pertinent information to other officers and supervisors.
· Fill out disposition slips in court for all prisoners’ court appearances and collect the appropriate paperwork from the courts.
· Liaise with various court staff including Judges, Justices of the Peace, Crown Attorneys, Lawyers, the Salvation Army, Clerks, and Reporters.
· Carry out duties in compliance with applicable legislation and procedures.
· Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.
Requirements:
· Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
· OACP Constable or Special Constable Certificate issued within the past three years.
· Valid Class G Driver’s License.
· Successful completion of LPS Fitness Test
· Valid Standard First Aid Certificate and CPR (Level C).
· 6-12 months’ related experience.
· Excellent problem-solving skills and judgement required to make decisions from numerous/broader range of alternatives covered by standards and precedents.
· Excellent communication skills for regular contact with other LPS members, external agencies, and arrested persons using tact, discretion, and persuasion to obtain willing action or consent in emotionally charged/potentially volatile situations on a regular basis.
Additional Requirements:
· Successful completion of LPS Special Constable Training upon selection
· Successful completion of the OPC issued Special Constable exam.

0930-1330 hours, Monday – Friday
Benefits:
Temporary members receive ten percent (10%) of their hourly rate in lieu of benefits (after 120 calendar days) and are also eligible to join the OMERS Pension Plan upon their first day of hire.
